Those skittery critters, famous for short attention spans. Or, more appropriately, the thing that distracts Doug the dog in Pixar\u2019s movie, \u201cUP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 In the attention-economy, we\u2019re all a bit skittery. Our brains are hardwired to prioritize \u201cscan for threats\u201d over \u201cfocus for food\u201d.\u00a0 If that weren\u2019t enough, our screens and \u201cblack mirrors\u201d don\u2019t help much with that \u201cfocus\u201d thing.\u00a0 Add on to the pile a recent global health event that has forced people to combine \u201cwork\u201d with \u201chome\u201d and \u201cchild\/parent\/pet\/other care\u201d into the same space, and timeframes.\u00a0 And in the midst of \/ on top of this, we\u2019re still expected to spend what little focus we have on learning? In a class?? And more frequently in a virtual Environment??<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yup. Or at least recognize and accommodate some of the changes that are already happening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, and specifically the idea that attention is short and hard to come by, I thought I might break this into 2 parts: One for learners,\u00a0 and another for trainers, teachers, educators.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:left;\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, looking at your next class w. Dread?\u00a0 Here\u2019s few quick principles I encourage participants in my classes to consider:<\/span><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><i>Take it Easy on yourself<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><i>Get what you can \/ Set Micro Goals<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><i>Draw a (mental) map and Keep (yourself) coming back<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><i>Network Network Network&#8230;<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think these are pretty self explanatory, but <\/span><b>if<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019ve still got your attention and you\u2019ve not yet scarpered off in search of other stuff, I thought I might break these down a teeny bit more:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\" style=\"--awb-content-alignment:left;\"><p><b><i>Take it Easy on yourself<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many training organizations (including my own) have already begun adapting to the changing demands of learner(s) already divided attention (shorter classes, micro-learnings, office hours, and more).\u00a0 However, there is still (and I think will always be) learning content that simply <\/span><b><i>requires<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prolonged and ongoing study.\u00a0 Not everything can be learned in 2-3 minute vignettes on YouTube.\u00a0 Recognize that.\u00a0 Accept it.\u00a0 <\/span><b>AND<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accept that you may <\/span><b>not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the attention to be able to simply <\/span><b>absorb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> everything like a sponge.\u00a0 Accepting and recognizing this will help you to get strategic in the next steps.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Get what you can \/ Set Micro Goals<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you accept that there\u2019s going to be some content \/ learning objectives that will be more than you feasibly absorb in the current circumstances of divided attention, you can start getting strategic about the content you <\/span><b>can<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> absorb.\u00a0 Take a look at the Outline \/ Syllabus \/ Book.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What things do you <\/span><b><i>already<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know??\u00a0 (these might be areas where your attention can \u2018coast\u2019 a bit if you have to\u2026 but be careful about this\u2026)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What things do you think are <\/span><b><i>learnable<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(these will be areas where you\u2019ll most need to focus your attention, take notes, make connections, and <\/span><\/i><b><i>maybe identify other folks who also are in the same boat for future review \/ study\u2026<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What things do you think are \u201c<\/span><b><i>over your head\u201d??<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (this is a tough one, but important: this is the area where you might need to give yourself a \u201cpass\u201d rather than put so much effort on attention that you \u201close\u201d the <\/span><\/i><b><i>learnable<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stuff mentioned above &#8211; if it\u2019s a multi-person class, identify other people that \u201cget it\u201d for follow-up possibly &#8211; or note other resources for later\u2026)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think these strategies are core for managing \/ learning heavy or deep content in today\u2019s focus-starved environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Draw a (mental) map and Keep (yourself) coming back<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already established there\u2019s probably more content than you\u2019re going to be able to keep in your noggin from a multi-day class.\u00a0 So what to do with all of the little (ahem) acorns of knowledge?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t pick squirrels at random (honest). One of the fascinating things about squirrels is that they can find these seemingly \u201crandomly\u201d buried acorns later.\u00a0 Evidence suggests they do it by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/64104-how-do-squirrels-find-buried-nuts.html#:~:text=%22While%20scatter%2Dhoarding%20squirrels%20probably,they%20do%20remember%20their%20caches.&amp;text=The%20organizational%20chunking%20behavior%2C%20which,the%20food%20they're%20burying.\"> <b>connecting to other cues<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and I\u2019d recommend doing the same &#8211; review the pieces you\u2019ve learned and connect them with other things you know really well<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review Review Review &#8211; I know this is boring, but there are dozens of resources about this.\u00a0 Like the squirrel, spend some of your time going back down the path(s) to the acorn(s) you\u2019ve discovered.\u00a0 Keep connecting and reconnecting them &#8211; so you can retrieve them when you need.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Network Network Network\u2026<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Networking is not just schmoozing for job opportunities &#8211; it can be schmoozing for collaborative learning opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any class &#8211; <\/span><b><i>look<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for (and to) the other students as well as the instructor \/ content:\u00a0 Who\u2019s asking the questions that are similar to yours?\u00a0 These might be good people to partner up and\/or follow up with to study with.\u00a0 Who\u2019s struggling on content you understand? (sometimes lending a hand is the best way to learn even deeper) Who seems to really get the parts you\u2019re struggling with, or might have missed bc of a meeting? (maybe a good person to reach out to for a little help?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a participant myself, I often find the other participants the most valuable part of any class (no offense intended to my instructors over the years)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think to sum things up as simply as possible, it\u2019s about recognizing, and honoring your, er, squirel-ness.
